    DIPLOMA IN PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR THE
    EXAMINATION OF 2011.
    Objectives of the Course-
    There is a great need for counselling and therapy among school and college students,
    industry, youth, old people and general population.
    1. The major objective of the course is to prepare professionally competent students
    with special skills in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
    2. This will be achieved by exposing the students to both theoretical and practical
    training.
    3. The trained students can get placements in schools, business organizations, mental
    health clinics, hospitals and voluntary agencies.
    Organization of the Course -
    Core Courses i.e. 4 will be categorized into two sections:

    Section A – Counselling Psychology
    Paper I : Preparation for special areas in Counselling.
    Paper II : Training in Counselling Interventions
    Section B – Psychotherapy
    Paper III: Patterns and Assessment of Maladaptive Behaviour
    Paper IV: Treatment of Maladaptive Behaviour

    PAPER I: PREPARATION FOR SPECIAL AREAS IN COUNSELLING
    Max. Marks : 100
    Theory : 80 Marks
    Project Work : 20 Marks
    Time : 3 hours
    INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER- SETTER/CANDIDATES
    There shall be 9 questions in all. The first question shall be short answer type containing
    15 short questions spread over the whole syllabus to be answered in about 25 to 30 words
    each. The candidate is required to attempt any 10 short answer type questions of 2 marks
    each. It shall carry 20 marks and shall be compulsory question. Rest of the paper shall
    contain 4 Units. Each Unit shall have two questions and the candidates shall be given
    internal choice i.e. the candidate shall attempt one question from each Unit – 4 in all.
    Unit I
    Helping in the development of personal characteristics and values among trainees.
    Building relationships: Training in acquiring, listening, reflecting, summarizing,
    confronting, interpreting and informing skills.
    Unit II
    Guidelines for:
    - Assessment and diagnosis – criteria for test selection
    - Administration and interpretation of tests
    - Aims and utility of non-testing techniques.
    Unit III
    School Counselling: Role and functions of elementary, middle and high school
    counsellors.
    Career Counselling: Career decision making theories, difficulties in making career
    choices.
    Unit IV
    Special Problems of children and adolescents; child abuse and neglect; depression; anti
    social behaviour; teenage pregnancy; conflicting and divorced parents.
    Contribution of system theory in marriage and family Counselling, Duvall’s family life
    cycle model, conjoint marriage counselling process.

    PAPER II: TRAINING IN COUNSELLING INTERVENTIONS
    Max. Marks : 100
    Theory : 80 Marks
    Project Work : 20 Marks
    Time : 3 hours

    PAPER III: PATTERNS AND ASSESSMENT OF MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOUR
    Max. Marks: 100
    Theory : 80 Marks
    Project Work : 20 Marks
    Time : 3 hours
    INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER- SETTER/CANDIDATES
    There shall be 9 questions in all. The first question shall be short answer type containing
    15 short questions spread over the whole syllabus to be answered in about 25 to 30 words

    Biological, psychosocial and socio-cultural view points of maladaptive behaviour;
    Stress and adjustment disorders: Stress and Stressors, Coping strategies and post
    traumatic stress disorder.
    Unit II
    Substance Use and Other Addictive Disorders: Alcohol Abuse and Dependence, Drug
    Abuse and Dependence.
    Unit III
    Mood Disorders: Major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder and bipolar disorder.
    Unit IV
    Clinical Assessment:
    Training in Administration, interpretation and diagnosis in the use of verbal and nonverbal
    tests of intelligence; administration of Wechsler adult intelligence scale and
    Wechsler Intelligence scale for children; Training in conducting interview; use of Bender
    Gestalt Test.

    PAPER IV: TREATMENT OF MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOUR

    Existential Therapy

    Training in preparation of case study of alcoholic, drug addict, depressive and child
    exhibiting learning disability
    Unit III
    Training in promotion of community mental health.
    Unit IV
    Training in relaxation techniques for therapeutic purposes with special reference to yoga,
    meditation and biofeedback techniques.
